Regional Workshop: Promoting a Scientific Culture towards the Responsible Energy Use in Educational Environments
Regional Workshop: Promoting a Scientific Culture towards the Responsible Energy Use in Educational Environments
Location: Lima, Peru
Date: 16-18 November 2014
The Organization of American States (OAS) gives special priority to the issue of education on the understanding that education is key to strengthen democratic institutions, promote the development of human potential, reduce and alleviate poverty, and foster greater understanding among peoples, as noted by the Inter-American Democratic Charter. In the specific context of sustainability, content of environmental education and sustainable development have been incorporated, skills necessary for the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources through the various themes that are being worked on in the Executive Secretariat for Integral Development (SEDI).
Given recent technical exchanges between the governments of Chile, Peru and Uruguay under the Working Group on Energy Efficiency of the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA), the development of methodological guidelines on teaching energy efficiency as part of the curriculum in schools to promote sustainable development was known. Therefore, interest arose to conduct a meeting to share methodologies and experiences in each of these countries. Also, experience in the Caribbean will be shared through the Caribbean Energy Awareness and Education Programme (CEEAP), which supports the capacity building of teachers and students.
In addition, this meeting will include representatives of Colombia and Mexico, who will share their experience in the implementation of programs on inquiry and scientific research in school environments and present this research as a pedagogical strategy for solving problems and as a tool for the integrated development of the region. These presentations will be given under the framework of education on energy efficiency and renewable energy.
