The economic growth experienced by Latin American and the Caribbean countries drives energy demand growth, which will increase by 20 percent by the end of the decade. With regard to electricity generation, although the region boasts one of the world’s cleanest energy matrices, the share of non-renewable resources in the energy mix is increasing. This change poses significant climate change challenges. Indeed, without a shift in current energy generation market trends greenhouse gas emissions will increase by 60 percent by 2050. Environmental and climate change challenges and the need to ensure safe and stable access to energy in order to promote the region’s social and economic growth require energy solutions geared toward curbing greenhouse gas emissions.
