International Renewable Energy Forum- Mexico

General purpose

The Ministry of Energy of Mexico (SENER) through the Sustainable Energy Fund and in collaboration with the National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Bank (WB), with the support of World Economic Forum, organized this event in order to emphasize the importance of promoting a strong deployment of renewable energy sources to generate electricity.

The main focus of this approach has to be based on respect for the rights of communities and social groups inhabiting the regions where it is located the exploitable potential, as well as through actions to ensure the sustainability of natural resources. This objective necessarily leads to the promotion of innovation, scientific research and technological development of society, as a way to achieve social inclusion by strengthening local capacities.

This event will provide a platform to discuss a sustainable energy future based on intraregional cooperation on clean energy, as it will also host the Ministerial Preparatory Meeting for the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA), and will include the participation of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

As part of Mexico’s commitment to a low-carbon energy transition, the Special Program for the Use of Renewable Energies 2014-2018 will be presented. This program defines and establishes the renewable energies’ participation goals in the electricity matrix, so as the strategies of the Federal Government to be implemented for the achievement of these goals.

Specific Objectives

  • Present the Special Program for the Use of Renewable Energies 2014-2018.
  • In the field of Renewable Energies:
    • Acknowledge technological innovation.
    • Share best practices in regulation and investment.
    • Identify actions to strengthen financing and risk mitigation, and to tackle barriers that inhibit market expansion.
    • Analyze social, environmental and public policy issues associated with renewable energy projects.
  • Conduct the preparatory Ministerial Meeting of the Alliance for Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA).
  • Develop an international workshop on Smart Networks under the leadership of IRENA and the World Bank.
  • Publication of calls for the creation of Mexican Innovation Centers for Small Hydropower, Ocean and Bioenergy.
  • Presentation of the Mexican Innovation Centers in Solar and Wind Power.

Venue: Hotel Fairmont Mayakoba

Dates: May 19th and 20th 2014.
Structure: Lectures and panel sessions with experts, government representatives and private sector leaders.
