Clean Energy Integration for a Sustainable Future – June 15
The countries in the Western Hemisphere are endowed with formidable renewable energy and critical mineral resources that give the Americas the potential to become a global clean energy leader. Abundant hydro, wind, solar, and geothermal resources position the region as a major producer of renewable energy. On the other hand, the advent of innovative hydrogen technologies, coupled with an adequate mix of utility-scale solar, wind, and geothermal infrastructure, could allow the region to become one of the lowest-cost exporters of green hydrogen in the world. With the right conditions, the transition from a fossil fuel- to a renewables-based energy sector could generate a 10% job growth in the Americas by 2030, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), foster new and bolder nationally determined contributions, and make a pivotal contribution to an integrated, carbon-free regional energy market.
In addition to adequate levels of public and private financing, boosting the regional clean energy integration will require greater electrical grid connectivity, modern regulatory frameworks, and innovative technologies as key ingredients that can turn Latin America and the Caribbean into a global leader in the clean energy transition. What does the region need to implement an ambitious clean energy integration agenda, and take the energy transition to the next level?
During the session, participants will discuss government and private sector perspectives on the energy transition, regional clean energy integration and interconnectivity, and green energy growth in the Americas. Discussions will provide inputs to the high-level deliberations that will take place in Punta Cana, in the occasion of the VI ECPA Ministerial to convene in 2024.
