CARICOM Energy Week
CARICOM Energy Week
This year marks the fifth staging of the CARICOM Energy Week, which is part of the annual calendar of activities within the CARICOM Energy Programme. The CEW seeks to increase knowledge and awareness around critical energy issues among diverse segments of the Community and is a partnership among the CARICOM Secretariat, Member States, regional institutions and development partners within the Community.
Background
Energy plays a vital role in the economic development of any society: Energy is the engine for the production of goods and services across all economic sectors. CARICOM Energy Week (CEW) was established in 2011, as an annual event, based on a mandate from CARICOM Energy Ministers to provide a platform for increased awareness on energy matters.
Objectives
CARICOM Energy Week (CEW) 2015 will be staged from Sunday, 8 November to Saturday, 14 November. Activities will be held across Member States of the Caribbean Community and will be under the theme “EmPOWERING our Sustainable Development”. The choice of the word “Empower” is a deliberate play on the term as it is envisioned that the spreading of awareness on sustainable energy will enhance the ability of Caribbean folk to make decisions and choices on the way in which they access and utilize energy; simultaneously, the broad engagement of stakeholders is expected to advance Regional efforts for sustainable energy production and use.
Scope
CARICOM Energy Week is intended to utilize a “mix of awareness building and knowledge creation” to increase the general participation in the Regional energy sector. The activities and events, which will be staged, will provide an opportunity to raise awareness in relation to energy matters in Member States whilst simultaneously addressing, in a deliberate way, some of the critical energy issues that continue to limit sustainable energy use and the sustainable economic development of the Region.
