OAS Earth Day Celebration – TERRA Screening: A Fun and interactive way for children and youth to learn about the Importance of preserving and treasuring our natural resources

Monday, April 08, 2013

The Department of Sustainable Development (DSD) of the Organization of American States, together with the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFFDD) and the Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic to the OAS, is holding a film screening of TERRA for children and youth at the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington, DC on April 22nd, 2013 in order to celebrate Earth Day and raise awareness about education for sustainability. The film will be shown at 6:30 p.m., followed by an interactive discussion.

TERRA was designed with the idea of transforming children and youth into environmentally-conscious, sustainable thinkers. TERRA is a fun and interactive film about the environment, presented using a platform through which the audience engages with the content by responding to a series of environment related trivia questions. In addition, the film includes interventions from a renowned biologist from the Dominican Republic who shares his experience in caring for the environment and reflects on positive actions that can benefit the planet. Terra has been used as an educational tool for sustainable development reaching more than 5,000 Dominican Children and Youth.

The discussion will begin with welcoming remarks by OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin, a Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic, and Natasha Despotovic, Executive Director of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFFDD). Inspiring stories and messages surrounding sustainable development will then be presented by Amy Beam, founder of the Beyond the Walls Program (Children and Nature, Mother Nature’s Child), ECPA Fellow Frank Lowenstein (Climate Adaptation Strategy Leader, Don’t Move Firewood campaign) and Juan Emilio Yanes, Executive Producer of the award-winning film Terra, after which the floor will be opened to the youth audience.
