[Webinar] Latin American NGO Growth and Management and Urban Planning

Date: Monday, March 15th, 2013

Time: 10:30 AM to 11:45 AM CTZ

Please join American Planning Association (APA) for a free webinar exploring the successes and challenges of four NGO’s in Latin America who are adopting innovative methodologies to confront climate change and urban development. Representatives from the following organizations will be leading this discussion:

  • La Eficiencia Legal para la Inclusión Social’s (ELIS) Rimac Reborn Project focuses on the revitalization of downtown Lima’s historical Rimac District. The Rimac District is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site designated in Lima.
  • Hábitat Para La Mujer Comunidad María Auxiliadora (Habitat for the Woman Project in the Maria Auxiliadora Community), located in Cochabamba, Bolivia, is a community of collectively owned properties whose residents work together to build their community and create an atmosphere that supports women as leaders.
  • Soluções Urbanas (SU) Family Architect Project in Brazil, created architectural plans for 100 housing renovations in the community by working with families to identify needs and desires for each house, and took into account serious structural and living condition issues. SU is now actualizing the original architectural designs, training families in sustainable housing renovation techniques to improve the quality of their informal housing, and establishing a local market to acquire building materials in exchange for recyclables.
  • EMBARQ México, an NGO located in Mexico City, is focused on improving public space by using Transit Oriented Development (TOD) strategies. The purpose of the project is to improve the quality of life for residents, act as a platform to trigger public life, and make more walkable and attractive spaces.

These four organizations were winners of the The Ashoka Changemakers Sustainable Urban Housing: Collaborating for Liveable and Inclusive Cities Platform Competition. The four Latin American demonstration projects were selected because of their strong potential to “scale up” the implementation of local and regional solutions in urban housing; ability to address urban environmental issues while fostering community engagement; and the ability to replicate the project in the NGO’s country and across Latin American to spark a spirit of collaboration across Latin America.

APA will be live tweeting at @ECPA_PLANNING during the session. If you have questions for the panelists please tweet them to @ECPA_PLANNING or send them to ecpa@planning.org.

The Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) Urban Planning Initiative is funded by the U.S. Department of State and led by APA. This initiative supports Latin American and Caribbean based planning projects geared towards addressing the challenges presented by climate change. According to the United Nations 2010/2011 State of the World’s Cities Report, these regions are the most urbanized in the developing world, with more than 79 percent of the population living in cities. The ECPA Urban Planning Initiative supports local projects that help Latin American and Caribbean cities to become more energy efficient, economically robust, and equitable; furthering these urban environments’ resiliency to climate change. The ECPA Urban Planning Initiative maintains multinational partnerships to build equitable communities of lasting value that are both economically and environmentally sustainable. Under this collaborative program, APA provides opportunities designed to improve institutional capacity, knowledge sharing, and expand long-term access to planning expertise and technical assistance throughout the Americas.
