The implementation of the standard ISO 50001 Energy Management System

Date: 8 – 12 December 2014

Place: St. Lawrence, Christ Church, Barbados

Energy cost in the Caribbean is among the highest in the world as indicated by the International Energy Agency (IEA). Caribbean energy costs are high because many of the territories do not having the presence of petroleum as a natural resource. As most economies are petroleum based, the implication is that most Caribbean countries have to import either crude oil or refined petroleum to power their economies. This vulnerability exposes the Caribbean economies to the vagrancies of the high variability of the price of oil and market speculators.

By improving the energy management of the private sector, and to a lesser extent, the public sector, the Caribbean economy would be expected to grow due to lower cost structures and improved cash flows which would be used to maintain the viability of the business and invest in the further development of the economy and the society.

As Small Developing Island States (SIDS) and developing countries in general, the Caribbean countries are more likely to be impacted by the devastating effects of climate change, sea level rise and increase in green-house gas emissions.

An EnMS is the part of an organisation’s management system dedicated to developing its energy policy, as well as managing those parts of the organisation’s activities, products or services that interact with the use of energy. It encompasses the tools and means to achieve our energy saving goals by applying a process of continuous improvement.

The objectives of the training course are:

• Acquire the necessary knowledge about what ISO 50001 and energy management systems aim to achieve;

• Learn how to implement an EnMS within an enterprise. An EnMS is the part of an organisation’s management system dedicated to develop its energy policy, as well as managing those parts of the organisation’s activities, products or services that interact with the use of energy;

• Know the characteristics of Caribbean energy users and the main barriers to EnMS implementation;

• Learn about the benefits of implementing an EnMS following ISO 50001 in companies.

• Identify low cost energy saving opportunities within an enterprise and develop reports;
