Regional Workshop: Sustainable Energy Project Development: Experience, Strategies and Implementation

When: Tuesday August 19, 2014

Time: 9:00 am โ€“ 5:00 pm

Where: Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia

Energy is critical to nearly every aspect of economic development. This is true for all countries, but is particularly critical in the Caribbean, where most energy resources are imported and the high cost of modern energy services impacts all aspects of development.

As such, the development and use of domestic natural resources for electricity and/or transportation services, combined with energy efficiency measures is essential to facilitate a transition to a more sustainable energy future for the region. Renewable energy alternatives are a key component of this transformation. However, the costs of incorporating renewables and energy efficiency services are a barrier that negatively impacts their uptake.

The upcoming workshop will create a forum for dialogue on the experiences of past and current support for energy project and policy development. In addition the workshop will help identify specific country requests for assistance to address challenges to sustainable energy project development and identify areas for synchronization with development partners.

The OAS Department of Sustainable Development, as the executing agency for the Sustainable Energy Capacity Building Initiative (SECBI) under the framework of the Energy and Climate of the Americas (ECPA) will host the event, which will bring together representatives senior energy government delegates, development partners, field experts, among other guests.

This is the second workshop designed to foster debate and promote better understanding on topics needed to addresses critical commercialization challenges related to injecting less environmentally harmful energy technologies. Through a wide range of participants in this topic, SECBI is facilitating the transition towards a low-carbon economy by introducing and encouraging sustainable energy alternatives into the Caribbean energy portfolio.

Join us to share what types of technical assistance have been most impactful in your country and where further support is needed in order to support regional efforts to promote sustainable energy development in the Caribbean!
