Panama: Regional Technical Workshop on the Impact of urban energy infrastructure expansion

In the early 1990s, a little over 70% of the population of Latin America and the Caribbean concentrated in urban areas according to UN data. By 2013 this amount reached almost 80%. According to ECLAC estimates, due to population growth and economic development, the population in cities grew to 560 million in 2025, representing an increase of 16% compared to the 472 million people who inhabited these areas by 2011.

In this context, it is imperative that governments implement sustainable strategies in the use and development of its energy matrix in order to ensure stable access to energy as an essential element of development.

This workshop in Panama will address the different experiences, solutions and various aspects related to the growth of cities and the challenge that this brings to the energy sector. From this perspective, the actions that governments have implemented in order to improve the current energy efficiency and ensure its supply to residential, commercial and industrial sector and the transport sector will be analyzed.
