Heavy Oil Working Group - Canada
United States, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Peru and Ecuador
To serve as a forum for heavy oil producers/consumers in the Americas to exchange information on best practices and technological innovation.
The energy supply portfolio of our hemisphere is shifting from one dominated by conventional resources to one increasingly dominated by unconventional resources. To address this issue, Canada has established the Heavy Oil Working Group to link together interested governments (initially of Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Mexico, the United States and Venezuela, industry, regional energy organizations and other stakeholders. This group will allow us to gain a greater understanding of the role of heavy oil in the Americas, and how we can work to reduce the environmental footprint of its extraction and development.
This working group seeks to: enhance information exchange and share technical expertise; identify challenges and barriers in areas of common interest, elaborate potential solutions and best practices or project initiatives to address these challenges; gain a greater understanding of the current role and future significance of heavy oils in the Americas; identify best practices in the heavy oil field in the participating countries; promote technical cooperation between national research centres; and collaborate with other networks on heavy oil.
Canada will coordinate the Heavy Oil Working Group with input from other members.
