Latinoamerica Renovable announces the launch of the “Renewable Monitor”

Ohio, USA – Latinoamerica Renovable, LLC announced today that it has launched a new product “Renewable Monitor” effective May 13, 2013. Solar-powered plane wraps first leg of flight across United States

(Reuters) - The flight from San Fransisco to Phoenix took 18 hours and 18 minutes on Saturday - and didn't use a drop of fuel.

A solar-powered airplane that developers hope eventually to pilot around the world landed safely in Phoenix on the first leg of an attempt to fly across the United States using only the sun's energy, project organizers said.

The plane, dubbed the Solar Impulse, took 18 hours and 18 minutes to reach Phoenix on the slow-speed flight, completing the first of five legs with planned stops in Dallas, St. Louis and Washington on the way to a final stop in New York.

The spindly-looking plane barely hummed as it took off Friday morning from Moffett Field, a joint civil-military airport near San Francisco.

It landed in predawn darkness at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, according to a statement on the Solar Impulse's website.

The flight crew plans pauses at each stop to wait for favorable weather. It hopes to reach John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York in about two months.

Swiss pilots and co-founders of the project, Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg, will take turns flying the plane, built with a single-seat cockpit. Piccard was at the controls for the first flight to Arizona.

The lightweight carbon fiber Solar Impulse has a wingspan of a jumbo jet and the weight of a small car and from a distance resembles a giant floating insect.

The plane was designed for flights of up to 24 hours at a time and is a test model for a more advanced aircraft the team plans to build to circumnavigate the globe in 2015. It made its first intercontinental flight, from Spain to Morocco, last June.

The aircraft is propelled by energy collected from 12,000 solar cells built into the wings that simultaneously recharge four large batteries with a storage capacity equivalent to a Tesla electric car that allow it to fly after dark.

The lightweight design and wingspan allow the plane to conserve energy, but make it vulnerable. It cannot fly in strong wind, fog, rain or clouds.

The plane can climb to 28,000 feet and flies at an average of 43 miles per hour (69 km per hour).

The project began in 2003 with a 10-year budget of 90 million euros ($112 million) and has involved engineers from Swiss escalator maker Schindler and research aid from Belgian chemicals group Solvay.

Just about all human activities in our modern world produce greenhouse gases (GHGs), primarily carbon dioxide (CO2), and thus contribute to climate change. The use of fossil fuels for transportation, generation of electricity, and industries is the main source of CO2 emissions. However, the removal of trees from forested land also generates GHGs: mature forests, having absorbed CO2 from the atmosphere while growing, store carbon in wood, leaves, and soil, and this carbon is released when people clear forested land.

Todas las actividades humanas del mundo moderno producen gases de efecto invernadero, principalmente dióxido de carbono, y por lo tanto contribuyen al cambio climático. El uso de combustibles fósiles para el transporte, la generación de electricidad y las industrias constituyen la principal fuente de emisiones de dióxido de carbono. Sin embargo, la tala de árboles en tierras forestales también genera gases de efecto invernadero: árboles maduros que absorbieron dióxido de carbono de la atmósfera durante su crecimiento, almacenan carbono en la madera, las hojas y el suelo. La deforestación libera este carbono.

IDB Initiative report for the Energy Innovation Center

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the United States Department of Energy (DOE) have been working together since 2009 to support the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA). In 2010, the IDB launched the ENE-Innovation Center to promote energy innovation and knowledge exchange by serving as a regional incubator for implementation and financing. This will allow the ENE-Innovation Center to also offer technical assistance and execute capacity building programs. Through the ENE-Innovation Center, the IDB is partnering with Governments and the private sector, both regional and non-regional, to provide support for sustainable energy innovation through: (i) knowledge dissemination; (ii) technical assistance; and (iii) capacity building. The ENE-Innovation Center will serve as a hub to the various renewable energy centers that are currently being developed throughout LAC. It will be staffed with professionals from the IDB and its partner institutions. This would include member country energy experts, assignments from leading research centers on renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy access, and energy security.

Durante la recesión mundial, el Hemisfério Occidental se ha desempeñado bastante bien, en comparación con el resto del mundo. Considerando el vasto potencial para el desarrollo de energía limpia en el Hemisfério, la Alianza continuará concentrando sus esfuerzos en aprovechar recursos financieros de otras fuentes que no sean el gobierno de los Estados Unidos. Es decir, gobiernos que lideren las iniciativas de la ECPA, el sector privado, la sociedad civil, instituciones financieras y bancos multilaterales de desarrollo.

El Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) y el Departamento de Energía de los Estados Unidos (DOE) apoyan a la Alianza de Energía y BID lanzó el Centro de Innovación ENE para promover la innovación y el intercambio de conocimiento en materia de energía funcionando como incubador regional y para la implementación y el financiamiento. A través del Centro de Innovación ENE, el BID se asocia con los gobiernos y el sector privado regional y no regional para ofrecer apoyo a la innovación en energía sostenible mediante: (i) difusión de conocimiento; (ii) asistencia técnica; y (iii) creación de capacidad. El Centro de Innovación ENE vinculará a varios centros de energía renovable que están siendo establecidos en América Latina y el Caribe. Contará con profesionales del BID y de instituciones asociadas. Incluirá expertos en energía de países miembros y colaboradores de centros líderes en investigación sobre energía renovable, eficiencia energética, acceso a la energía y seguridad energética.

La Fundación Rockefeller financia este esfuerzo conjunto del Departamento de Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano de Estados Unidos, el Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos y la Asociación Americana de Planeamiento, con apoyo del Ministerio Brasileño de las Ciudades.

El informe especial sobre fuentes de energía renovable y mitigación del cambio climático (conocido por su acrónimo en inglés SRREN) que acordó y publicó el Grupo Intergubernamental sobre el Cambio Climático el 9 de mayo en Abu Dabi evalúa la literatura existente sobre el potencial futuro de la energía renovable para mitigar el cambio climático. Abarca las seis tecnologías de energía renovable más importantes, así como su integración a sistemas energéticos actuales y futuros. También toma en cuenta las consecuencias ambientales y sociales vinculadas con estas tecnologías, el costo y las estrategias para superar los obstáculos técnicos y no técnicos de su aplicación y difusión.

The Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN), agreed and released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on May 9th in Abu Dhabi, assesses existing literature on the future potential of renewable energy for the mitigation of climate change. It covers the six most important renewable energy technologies, as well as their integration into present and future energy systems. It also takes into consideration the environmental and social consequences associated with these technologies, the cost and strategies to overcome technical as well as non-technical obstacles to their application and diffusion.
